NASH TIMBERS DECEMBER NEWSLETTER
Nash Timbers wishes all our Clients A Happy New Year and a safe and happy Holiday Season.
Thanks for all your support in 2008.
Timber Mills close from 19th December to 12th January 2009
Timber Warehouse closes between 24th December to 12th January 2009, no deliveries available during this time.
We cannot stress how important it is to remind our clients how imperative it is to ensure that you have your timber orders in the system for next year for January and February. Also if you need timber over the Xmas period we need to organize the delivery before the warehouse closes.
November open house was a great success with a good roll up of Architects and builders with lots of questions which kept David on his toes. Note the new dates for next year below.
Nash Timbers continue with The Nash Timber Presentation which has been certified by NSW Architectural Board for CPE Activity Formal Points & Builders CPD Event, at our home office monthly.
When: 28/01/09, 25/02/09 and 25/03/09 At: 5:00pm
(Must Book)
I would like to add two regular features to Nash Timbers Monthly Newsletter
1) YOUR QUESTION
2) PROBLEMS THAT ARISE
You now have your chance to send your question and test our knowledge!!!!!
YOUR QUESTION?
Why does timber grow and shrink?
A Timber board is a living product; during its life moisture is taken on & lost which changes the width of the board. Timber only dies when burnt
OOPS!
Ghosting!
The hardworking floor layer spends all night finishing lime washing a job, as builder is normally in a panic at this stage of the building.
Builder comes on site and walks on floor before dry or walks on floor with wet socks and discoloration can occur immediately or up to 6 months later.
Would you walk on the walls whilst the paint is wet?
RECYCLED TIMBER
Before 2008 timber was coming from warehouses, derelict buildings & factories, which produced timber which was not out in the weather and timber was of a better quality and less imperfections which included Blackbutt and Tallowwood.
Timber is now recycled from power poles, bridges and wharves, which as had a life outside and is predominately Grey Ironbark and Spotted Gum with more imperfections..
A new mill has opened in Southern NSW, which allows for Nash Timbers to offer Recycled timber at a more reasonable price. The Mill is able to Dress All Round, wire brush and laminate long lengths together up to 8mts, finish size of 250mm to 250mm, bigger sizes on application.
DECKING
Does all decking go grey? Yes
Why?
Ultra violet sucks out the colour from the timber. Red colour timber will be sucked quicker i.e Merbau and Red Ironbark decking than from Tallowwood, Spotted Gum or Blackbutt Decking.
To retain natural colour a clear ultraviolet timber protection has to be applied every 6 months.
Untreated Decking starts to grey off from 6 months.
Why does decking bleed?
Decking bleeds because the timber cell structure is protecting itself by throwing out sap, the timber cells believe that they are still alive.
A timber water repellent product can be applied which will slow the process.
If the timber is untreated sap will be excreted up till 6 to 9 months, increased when the timber gets wet.
Oxalic Acid (derivative from the root of a spinach plant) can be used to remove sap from tiles or cement.
Garo Garo, Red and White Mahogany and Western Red Cedar appear to do bleeding before going onto site.
Apply a decking oil to decking every 12 months to maintain integrity of the timber.
